The Fingerprint Reader is a door entry reader that verifies staff by fingerprint. Unlike a card, a fingerprint cannot be lent to a colleague or left at home, so entry is recorded against the person who actually came through the door. It passes the credential to your access control panel, which decides whether the door opens.

Specifications

Sensor Z-ID fingerprint sensor.
Protection rating IP65. Fully dust tight and resistant to water splashes from any direction, so it copes with a wash-down area or a sheltered external door.
Casing Stainless steel front, which stands up to heavy daily use and to being leaned on, kicked and trolleyed into.
Communication RS485. Fingerprint templates are sent to the panel for matching, which is how the Inbio panels handle biometric doors.
Installation Fits a standard single gang junction box, so on most doors it goes where an existing switch or reader already sits.

Which panel you need

This reader sends fingerprint templates over RS485 to the panel, so it needs an Inbio panel rather than a C3. Inbio comes in one, two and four door versions, so you can size it to the job without paying for capacity you will not use. You will also need a lock such as a mag lock, a push to exit and break glass, and a power supply.

Before you install biometrics

Fingerprint data is special category data under UK GDPR, so you need a lawful basis and usually a data protection impact assessment before rolling it out, and staff need an alternative if they object. If that matters on your site, an RFID reader avoids the question entirely. Our guide to UK GDPR and workforce data covers what you need in place, and our data security page explains how the data is stored.

How it compares

For contactless entry, the Bioface Reader uses face and palm instead, which suits sites where hands are gloved or dirty. To record hours as well as open doors, look at the U600 fingerprint clock. Background on the options is on our fingerprint recognition page, and the full range is on the products page.
