The basics

What is fingerprint clocking?

Fingerprint clocking is a way for staff to record their hours using their own fingerprint instead of a card or PIN. When someone places their finger on the reader, the terminal matches it to their record and clocks them in or out, then sends the time to your time and attendance system. Because a fingerprint cannot be shared or passed on, it confirms exactly who is present, which makes it one of the most accurate ways to record attendance.

Key benefits

Verified attendance

A fingerprint confirms exactly who clocked in, so one person cannot clock in for another.

Nothing to lose or replace

No cards or fobs to issue, lose, or replace. Each employee always has their fingerprint with them.

Fast and simple

Staff clock in with a single touch, so there are no queues at the start or end of a shift.

Clocking and access in one

The same terminal can control door access, so a fingerprint handles both clocking and entry.

Accurate, secure, and easy to run

The terminal stores a mathematical template of each fingerprint, not an image, and uses it to verify staff in an instant. Clockings are held on the unit and sent to your system automatically, so the picture stays accurate even during a brief connection drop.

Fast, one-touch verification at the terminal
Stores a secure template, not a fingerprint image
Clockings held on the unit and synced automatically
Feeds accurate hours straight to payroll

Where fingerprint clocking works best

Fingerprint clocking suits any site that wants accurate, verified attendance with no cards to manage.

Factories and manufacturing

Verified clocking at shift changeover, with accurate hours for payroll and no shared cards.

Warehouses and distribution

A single terminal handles high volumes of staff quickly, with entry control built in.

Sites needing tight accuracy

Where hours must be exact and verified, biometric clocking removes any doubt over who was present.

Mixed on-site and mobile teams

On-site staff use the terminal while mobile staff clock from the app, all in one system.

Fingerprint clocking FAQs

How does fingerprint clocking work?
Staff place a finger on the reader to clock in and out. The terminal matches it to their record and sends the time to your time and attendance system. Because a fingerprint cannot be shared, it confirms exactly who was present.
Does the terminal store an image of my staff’s fingerprints?
No. The terminal stores a mathematical template derived from the fingerprint, not a photo of it, and the template cannot be reverse engineered back into a fingerprint. Employers should tell staff what is stored and why, in line with ICO guidance, as biometric data is sensitive personal data.
Can the same terminal control door access?
Yes. A fingerprint can clock staff in and out and control entry through doors, so you manage clocking and access control from one system, with nothing for staff to carry.
What if a fingerprint will not read?
Occasionally a fingerprint is hard to read, for example if a finger is cut or heavily worn. The system can enrol more than one finger per person, and staff who cannot use fingerprint can be set up to clock another way, such as a card or the app.
Can we use fingerprint and the mobile app together?
Yes. On-site staff can clock with a fingerprint at the terminal while mobile staff clock from their phone with the Syncro Connect app, all feeding into one system.
Do the hours flow through to payroll?
Yes. Approved hours flow into payroll with direct Sage Payroll integration and export for Pegasus and QuickBooks, so there is no manual re-keying.
