Face recognition clocking FAQs
How does face recognition clocking work?
At enrolment, the terminal maps the unique features of an employee’s face and stores them as an encrypted template. Each time they clock in, the live scan is matched to that template. If it matches, the clocking is recorded against that person, so every hour is tied to who actually worked it.
Does the system store a photo of my face?
No. No facial image is kept. The terminal stores only an encrypted mathematical template, which cannot be reverse engineered back into a photo. Biometric data is special category data under UK GDPR, and storing templates rather than images is central to handling it responsibly.
Does it still work if someone changes their appearance?
Minor day-to-day changes are handled fine. If an employee’s appearance changes significantly over time, they can be re-enrolled in moments so matching stays accurate. Terminals also support card, fob, and PIN clocking as a backup.
Do staff have to use face recognition, or is there an alternative?
There is an alternative. The ICO advises giving employees a genuine choice, and Computime terminals also support card, fob, and PIN clocking, so staff who prefer not to use a facial scan can still clock in.
If an employee leaves, is their facial data deleted?
Yes. When an employee leaves, their template is removed from both the terminal and the cloud, with a record of the deletion, supporting the UK GDPR right to erasure so you are not left holding data for people who no longer work for you.
Is face recognition better than fingerprint?
Neither is better overall, they suit different sites. Face recognition is fully contactless, which suits hygiene-sensitive workplaces and staff wearing gloves. Fingerprint is fast and works well in direct sunlight. Compare fingerprint clocking or talk to us about which fits your team.
